Hartford, Connecticut – January 14, 2025 – Capital Workforce Partners is proud to announce it has been recommended to receive an $11.9 million Digital Equity Competitive Grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. This funding will support the organization’s ongoing efforts to expand broadband access and digital literacy programs for underserved communities across the North Central region of the state. The grant supports CWP and fourteen community partners convened under the Central Connecticut Innovative Digital Equity Alliance, including public library systems, adult education providers, and community-based organizations.

Capital Workforce Partners is the state’s premier Workforce Development Board, its mission is to leverage public and private resources to produce skilled workers for a competitive regional economy.

CWP helps individuals overcome barriers to employment and closes the gap between skills and business hiring needs.

As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s broader initiative to ensure that all Americans have access to high-speed internet and the skills needed to fully participate in the digital economy, the NTIA’s Digital Equity Competitive Grant Program aims to close the digital divide and promote equitable access to technology.

The grant will help to provide resources and opportunities for individuals and families to gain the digital skills needed to thrive in a modern, interconnected society.

Key initiatives of the Digital Equity Grant Program include:

  • Expanding Broadband Access: Building infrastructure and partnerships to improve access to affordable, high-speed internet services.
  • Digital Literacy Training: Offering classes and workshops to help individuals improve their digital skills, including using computers, navigating the internet, and accessing online services.
  • Community Engagement: Working closely with local leaders, schools, and organizations to ensure the programs address the unique needs of each community.

“We are excited to partner with NTIA in advancing digital equity and ensuring that no one is left behind in our increasingly digital world,” said Alex Johnson, President & CEO, Capital Workforce Partners. “This grant will help us reach more individuals and families, empowering them with the tools they need to succeed in education, employment, healthcare, and beyond.”

The funding comes as part of a historic investment in broadband infrastructure and digital equity, with a goal of reaching all Americans, regardless of geography or income level. The initiative is part of the broader infrastructure package signed into law by President Biden in 2021, which includes investments in broadband expansion and digital literacy.

In a statement, Senator Blumenthal major proponent of the funding, emphasized the critical role of broadband in supporting economic growth, education, healthcare and overall community development. He also reaffirmed his commitment to working with the federal government and state leaders to ensure that funds from the grant are effectively utilized to bridge the digital divide. He expressed his belief that equal access to technology is essential for the future of the nation, especially as more services and opportunities move online.

Capital Workforce Partners is dedicated to providing equitable access to technology and digital resources.
