Think Construction Work is Just for Men? Think Again...
Tammy is just one example of why some women are choosing to build their future...by building.
Tammy was driving CDL several years ago, when she was looking for another avenue for her career. When applying for a construction job, she was referred to the Jobs Funnel where she took a pre-apprenticeship class, joined the Local 15 and then entered CWP’s Jobs Funnel Women’s Welding program where she obtained key welding certifications. Tammy said this field is “challenging even after four years – each job is different – but at the end of each day you go home and say – “I did that!”
Some of projects Tammy has helped to build are: the new addition to the UCONN Health Center in Farmington, Yale School of Management; Bedford Square in Westport, Rocky Hill and Emmett O’Brien High Schools, Pratt & Whitney buildings; and the XL Center. “It is empowering,” said Tammy to get out there and do something that traditionally you have been told, is not for women. It is also empowering have the earning power to be able to take care of my four children without any need for government assistance. It’s a real confidence builder.”
