Hospital for Special Care - a Special Partner in Youth Employment
Hospital for Special Care provided summer employment opportunities for eight New Britain High School's Health Academy students in Capital Workforce Partners' (in partnership with OIC New Britain) 2013 Summer Youth Employment and Learning Program. Four students participated in summer 2012. The hospital's managers/supervisors were so pleased with the students' performance that they have requested eleven students for summer 2014.
At Hospital for Special Care, students work in various departments such as clinical engineering, information technology, medical records, food services, building services, research, rehabilitation unit, therapeutic recreation, Aquatic Rehabilitation Center, pulmonary support group and adaptive sports. Students are able to gain real life experiences, engage in meaningful work and learn about the day-to-day operations of various hospital departments.
As a result of their work experiences through this program, several former students have been hired again. As an example, Jose A. Rodriguez graduated from high school and was hired full time in Food Services while taking online courses to further his education. In addition to Jose, Hospital for Special Care has hired other students part-time while still in school.
Food Services Department Manager Raina Brouillet states: "My experience with these students has been very positive; they are goal oriented and motivated to work. While they are here for the five weeks in the summer we are able to train and mentor them as we would any new hire. They receive additional guidance from their program coaches on a weekly basis. By the time they have completed the program they are well prepared for the employment process. The transition to employment is almost seamless. Some of the students we have hired are pursuing careers in healthcare and plan to continue their employment here while attending college. Their goal is to ultimately obtain a position here at Hospital for Special Care in their chosen field. It is definitely a win-win for everyone!"
