Milliechel Wins 2015 Capital Workforce Stars Award
Milliechel Ramirez grew up in Puerto Rico where her uncle owned his own manufacturing company and where she spent the majority of her childhood. From early on she worked the machines in his company and learned the basics of manufacturing. Moving to the United States did not deter her from becoming the machinist that she dreamed of as a child. Millie went on to attend A.I Prince Technical High School where she continued to pursue manufacturing. After graduating at the top of her class she went on to Manchester Community College where she was unable to complete the program because she had a baby and it was challenging to arrange childcare. Still determined to succeed, Millie was eligible for WIA Youth assistance and took part in the Pathways to Manufacturing Initiative offered by Our Piece of the Pie in partnership with Asnuntuck Community College. Millie pursued a certification to become a CNC Machinist. With some transportation assistance afforded by WIA, as well as books for both semesters of learning, boots and safety glasses, Millie went to Asnuntuck every day and became quite proficient. During Millie's second semester she was provided a paid internship in which she would work two days out of her school week.
Millie completed the program and was one of the top students at Asnuntuck. Now fully employed today Millie can afford childcare which enables her to work as much as she can. She was hired directly after her internship ended by Floyd Manufacturing in Cromwell, Ct. She has quickly acclimated to the workplace and has received many raises and promotion. Recently, she was sent to California to train on a new machine that she exclusively can operate. During a site visit, her supervisor referred to the new machine as "Millie's Machine".
On June 1st, Millie Ramirez was recognized as one of three 2015 Capital Workforce Partners Workforce Stars at the Hartford Club, in Hartford.
