A total of 13 trainees completed a combination of classroom and field instruction. The field instruction included four (4) weeks of work experience. The City of Hartford awarded a project to Capital Masonry consisting of 445 linear feet of sidewalk. The worksite was located at the corner of Vine and Coventry Streets. By 6/27/14, the trainees had completed building a total of 395 linear feet of sidewalk. Trainees learned valuable skills in cement masonry including excavation of new foundations, concrete forming and finishing.
The goal of the program was to develop a qualified pool of Hartford residents who are qualified and prepare to perform this type of work. The program has already yielded positive results. Gedeon Torres has secured full-time employment with Viking Construction. Viking is doing work in the city and are looking to hiring additional residents through the program. Shamar Thornton has also been offered full-time employment by a contractor performing work in the city. Resumes of those who have successfully completed the program have been submitted to the City of Hartford to present to contractors awarded this type of work for consideration of employment opportunities as they become available.
The program was made possible by Hartford Foundation for Public Giving funds and contract award by the City of Hartford to Capital Masonry Inc.
