Hartford Youth Wins U.S. Conference of Mayors' DollarWise
Summer Youth Jobs Contest, a part of Capital Workforce Partners'
Summer Youth Employment Program
Mayor Segarra presented I-Pad to Center for Latino Progress program participant, Rafael Jeffries
Hartford, August 12, 2014 Capital Workforce Partners and the City of Hartford are pleased to announce that a Hartford youth employment participant, Rafael Jeffries, was one of eighteen winners nationwide of the Dollarwise, Mayors for Financial Literacy program, Summer Youth Jobs Contest, that was built into North Central Connecticut's regional summer youth employment program. In order to be considered, participants needed to complete the DollarWise financial education learning modules and register for the contest.
The DollarWise campaign, partnering with Bank of America, is administered through the U.S. Conference of Mayors, of which, Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra is a member. Earlier this year, The U.S. Conference of Mayors presented Mayor Segarra with an award for winning first place for medium/small cities in last year's National SummerYouth Jobs Challenge. The award honors the outstanding achievements in innovative partnerships between cities and local business and non-profit communities to help provide youth with meaningful summer job experiences.
Mayor Segarra is committed to the youth and future workforce of the city of Hartford. Since taking office in 2010, Segarra has invested regularly in youth employment programming, leveraging state and foundation funds to further expand work opportunities for young people. In 2014, the Mayor allocated $1 million enabling hundreds of youth in the region to have a work and learn experience. In Hartford, the community based agencies organizing programs were: Blue Hills Civic Association, Center for Latino Progress, Community Renewal Team, Our Piece of the Pie and Restoring Lives Community Development Corporation. Capital Workforce Partners' regional program is part of a larger, state-wide Summer Youth Employment program that also receives funding from the State of Connecticut and public and private Foundations.
