programs provided through

These programs are critical in developing a skilled, educated and vital workforce. Led by a consortium of the region’s chief elected officials, and representatives from business, education, labor and public groups serving on its Board of Directors Capital Workforce Partners is an essential “Partner” for economic development in the region.

SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT COLUMN

2010 SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT

The 2010 Summer Youth Employment and Learning Program gives youth opportunities for job readiness, leadership and decision making.  The program is funded by the State of Connecticut - Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) with leveraged funds from select municipalities and foundations.

New Britain Herald Interns

Working the News Beat - It’s been a rewarding summer for New Britain Herald CWP Summer Youth Employment interns Mahnoor Ali and Zach Smith-Grabko. The two New Britain High School students — Ali, 16, a junior; Smith-Grabko, 17, a senior — came to the Herald by way of OIC and covered several stories before heading back to school in September.

CREC East Hartford held its summer end youth employment celebration at Charlie's Restaurant- Shown here are the three best dressed winners at the event. Some of the jobs the youths worked at this summer include parks and recreation, health care and more. (Story posted by CWP intern Alisha Johnson)

CT Puerto Rican Forum Internship

CT Puerto Rican Forum connected some students to the Media - Here is Cinthya DeJesus at her Identidad Latina summer internship worksite - looks likes she fits right in!

The OPP "We are Fit" Nutritional and Fitness team - culiminated their 6-week summer program with a 5k run.  Most ran, some walked and they all said they really enjoyed it.  At this August 13 completion event they viewed a video and photos of the run and shared their stories with their peers in other OPP Programs like Junior Art Makers, Multi-Media, River Wright Boat Builders and a Book Club.


Boy Scouts Learn CWP Career Competencies

The CT River Boy Scouts Summer Employment Program - focused on the CWP Career Competencies.  Everyone had an opportunity to showcase what they learned at their August 13 completion ceremony.

Voices from Bristol --

Migdariana's Summer Job was at the Law Firm of Roger Chiason. About her job - "I realized I picked the right major in school." Migdariana is headed to Post University in the fall to study law.

Crystal worked at Bristol-Pre-School this summer.  She said, "I have learned what I want to do with my life and have refocused my career goals." She plans to become a pre-school teacher.

----

Joshua said that the most important thing he learned this summer was "being responsible and optimistic no matter the situation."  He plans to major in Business Adminiistration at Tunxis in the fall.


August 11, 2010 – OPP Mural Unveiling Captures Media Attention - A participant in the Summer Youth Employment program with Our Piece of the Pie is interviewed by WNBC-Channel 30 at the unveiling of the youth-produced mural now open to public viewing at the Hartford Public Library.

Meet Madeline Lebron.  Madeline has been working in the main office at HRA in New Britain since Capital Workforce Partners Federal Workforce Investment Act and ARRA-funded program got her started there in February 2010. This summer she continues her employment with State TANF funding.  As a result of her experience at HRA, she plans to attend business school.

Meet Joshua Wrice,  a recent graduate of E.C. Goodwin Tech High School who started his 2010 Summer Youth Employment and Learning Program job at Story Brothers Automotive in New Britain.  Story Brothers plans to hire him upon the completion of his summer program.  In addition, Joshua plans to attend a technical college to become an auto mechanic.

July 14, 2010 - Governor Congratulates New Britain Youth in the FHITEC Program for Their Help With the Environment - The Environmental Track of the FHITEC (Finance, Health, Information Technology, Environmental Careers)  Youth Employment Program was honored by Governor M.  Jodi  Rell at New Britain High School. This program’s purpose is to learn about and help the environment in and around the communities in which the youth workers  live. Governor Rell showed her appreciation by coming and speaking     to the youths, and thanking them for their hard work     and dedication.

SMART Program graduates at Manchester Community College

July 29, 2010 – The “SMART” graduates are at Manchester Community College (MCC)
Congratulations to the recent graduates of the Pre-Manufacturing Certificate program at Manchester Community College (MCC), a part of a Skills for Manufacturing and Related Technologies (SMART) Grant. Their hard work and accomplishment was recently celebrated by administrators and staff at MCC. This program continues to broaden participation in advanced manufacturing in CT by providing incumbent and displaced workers a path to training for in-demand jobs. Click here for more photos

June 28, 2010 - Subsidized Employment Intern, Virginia Padin Spoke of Her Experience with CTWorks at a Recognition Breakfast - The breakfast was held at The Crowne Plaza in Cromwell, "This work experience has been such a blessing. I wanted to prove I was not just an intern, but part of the team." "CTWorks was there when I needed them." Virginia (r) is now a full time employee at Latino Community Services.
